Lansdowne

Lansdowne has remained a famous destination among tourists since British came to India. It is a beautiful hill station that is well connected via motorable roads to northern region. Situated at an altitude of 1,700 meters above sea level, Lansdowne is surrounded with blue pine forests and thick oaks. It is one of the quietest hill stations in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand.

Lansdowne is named from the erstwhile British Viceroy Mr. Lord Lansdowne. The ambience of the place is crispy, clean and fresh. People across the country come to this place to enjoy the bounties of nature and to refresh their mind and soul.

When British ruled over India, the town came into existence to provide Rifle training and recruitment. Presently, the command office of the Garhwal Rifles of Indian Army is located at this place. The place is much cleaner and well-maintained due to the cantonment area of Garhwal rifles. It has many buildings of British colonial architecture.

Lansdowne is the closest hill stations from Delhi/NCR region and it’s a perfect weekend getaway. It is quiet, not over developed and less crowded hill station. You will love to watch the rustic buildings and churches at Lansdowne which narrate the untold colonial history of British era. The traditional name for Lansdowne was ‘Kaludanda’ which means Black Hills.

Lansdowne offers amazing adventure activities like bird watching, rock climbing, trekking etc. One can spot different species of birds here. Here is a man-made lake named Bhulla Lake where tourists can enjoy boating and paddling.

The pristine environment of Lansdowne leaves a great impact on tourists and makes it a perfect place to meditate. October to March is the best time to visit Lansdowne. It is an ideal weekend destination to get relaxed with family and friends. Being situated in cantonment area, it is quite peaceful and well-maintained hill station. It is not much crowded unlike other hill stations like Nainital, Shimla and Mussoorie.
