Tehri district of Uttarakhand is divided in two regions: New Tehri and Old Tehri. Old Tehri is 16 Kms away from New Tehri, situated on the convergence of Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers. The place has derived its name from “Trihari” that signifies the position which cleans away three types of sins- Vacha, Karmana and Mansa. Old Tehri was studded with historical buildings and temples which are now submerged under Tehri Dham.

Once Old Tehri was inhabitated and now it’s ruined under water. New Tehri came into existence when old Tehri was submerged and this is the only region that came into existence by a well-planned project. New Tehri is very attractive town and population of Old Tehri was shifted to New Tehri as the dam building was not safe. New Tehri is also considered as Asia’s most successful rehabilitation program.

It is perched at a height of 1550 to 1950 meters above sea level. It is the district headquarters of the Tehri district and Tehri Dam is one of the major tourist attractions here. It is one of the world’s largest hydroelectric projects that harness waters of two important rivers of Himalayas namely Bhilangana and Bhagirathi.

New Tehri is developing as an amazing tourist spot for its pleasant weather. During winters, tourists can enjoy snowfall here and Government has also developed several sightseeing attractions. Tehri Dam Lake is Asia’s largest man-made lake. It is capable of producing around 2400 MW of electricity.
